Turtles Natural History Card
Turtles, or Testudines, are reptiles that evolved over 200 million years ago and have a shell that developed mainly from their ribs. There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles found on land, in freshwater, and in oceans. They range in size from a few inches to over 8 feet and their shells are made of bone with an outer surface covered in scales of keratin. Turtles are
“cold-blooded” and are ominvores, eating plants and animals. Although many turtles spend large amounts of time underwater, all turtles breathe air and lay their eggs on land.
